What are three suggestions for beginning a career in the industry?
1. Assistant Editor
For careers in post-production (video editors), becoming an assistant editor is an excellent introduction to working in this industry. Video editing is one of my strengths and interests, so this is a job I plan to apply for shortly. In this job, unlike the others listed, it is harder to move through ranks by being polite and learning as you go. You may often have to display your editing skills upfront, submit a cover letter or demo reel.
2. Production Assistant/Runner
The Production assistant or PA is often regarded as the lowest of the totem pole regarding production jobs in the industry. However, while they are not the most desirable, they are also not the hardest. This means if you are less experienced, this can be the quickest and easiest way to gain experience and make connections.
Internships, in my opinion, are the best way to go if your goal is to make it to the top in the film industry. While many internships are offered to college students, they are not restricted to them. Finding the right internship will take time and research (like any job) but the rewards are far more significant.
