How is Netflix changing the television landscape?
Netflix has revolutionized the way we consume content. Before the age of video streaming giants, viewers were restricted to certain shows at specific days and times of the week. Now, viewers have the complete freedom to watch what they want whenever they want. This enormous gain in freedom from a restriction on when people consume content had had a large impact on traditional television services and companies.
While streaming services have had a significant impact on the market, they do not replace television services entirely. This is due to the exclusivity some shows, and sports programs have to television. However, as content providers (such as HBO, CBS, and Showtime to name a few), there are fewer and fewer reasons to remain subscribed to cable television.
How will this trend continue into the future?
From 2012 to 2015 alone, television subscribers fell by 389 thousand, while Netflix gained 11 million in the same amount of time. It was estimated in 2015 that Netflix would reach 100 million users by 2017, and they managed to surpass that projection with 109.25 million to date.
Based on these statistics alone, it is fairly safe to assume that streaming and other Internet-based companies will continue to dominate more and more of the market into the future.
